Today’s post is by the one and only Chris Martin, one of our Tech Support Specialists.

Gravestone Office 2003Growing up, I hated history. I would sit in grade school listening to the teacher drone on, and my mind would wander. How could something that has already happened in some long-lost time really affect me now? Well a child’s short attention span really didn’t want to take the time to contemplate even this.

Later in life, friends and family would consider me a history nut. I would write my own histories of holidays and other events, hand them out, create quizzes and have fun with my coworkers, friends and family. Only to receive the glazed-over looks that I grew up perfecting. Later, the History Channel created these much better than I ever could. Those around me were once again spared everything but the 25-minute anecdote.

We have a whole generation starting to grow up who did not live through 9/11, experience the Cold War or know anyone who fought in World War II, much less meet anyone who lived through the Great Depression. Our parents’ perspective was created through the filter of their experience. Just so, I would love to read the biographies of the historians to better understand their perspective. When it is all said and done, Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, would add, “I hate to think that all my current experiences will someday become stories with no point.”

In honor of Bill Watterson, let us change the subject and ask: Did you know Microsoft is discontinuing support of…
